Crop rotation - when to move them round??
« on: September 01, 2011, 20:26 »
Hi
This is my first post so hope I don't get it wrong?

This is my first growing season.  I have 4 raised beds 10 ft x 4ft.
1) Legumes
2) Potatoes
3) Onions & roots
4) Brassicas

I've had a not bad harvest and no major disasters - yet!  I still have some bits of veg left in each bed.

Now to the point......the question?????????

I've got some winter veg seedlings being deliverd from an on-line supplier.  A mixed 'seasonal' pack so I don't know what will be in it till I open it.  Where do I plant this stuff?
Do I keep to the same rotation e.g. if he's sent winter cabbages do I put them in the brassica bit?  Or do I take everything out and move the beds on now for the next season??
I thought I would do that next spring but I'm really confused.

I also want to plant onion sets shortly but I don't know if I should put them in the bed where the onions grew this year or move them on.

I would really appreciate some tips on this.

Thanks in advance!

Confused - first poster.

It can be so confusing when you start out. Don't worry.

I would plant your winter plants in new beds. New onion sets will not be harvested until July/Aug next year, so to use Spring's rotation is correct.

Someone else may tell you different.

Very true  :D Don't take stuff out let them finish growing :)
If I was planting, I would put plants that will be picked over winter, in this year's rotation beds eg  the winter brassicas go in the bed where brassicas have been this year, cos they will be used before spring planting takes place. (If you had grown them direct from seed they would be in this year's brassica bed..so that's where I'd plant them)

Over-wintering onions I'd put where onions should be next year, cos they will be in the right place for next year's rotation.

That's my problem!  The onions would be going where the brassicas are.  But if I'm not moving them on, there's no space for the onions.  AARGHHHH!!!!

mmm difficult then

Will you have room for the brassicas in the legume bed by the time they need planting? You could always pot the new plants up to give yourself a bit of time.

and then plant the onions in the brassica bed.  Overwintering onions make things so difficult in a small space,  don't they

Thanks all for your replies.  Think potting up for a wee while to give me time sounds like a plan.  Maybe shouldn't get too hung up on these things and just put them in where they will fit.  I just want to do it right - but looks like there's more than 1 way to skin a cat or is it a rabbit?!

Cheers
