I haven't grown these before, but planning to put some in this year. How much space would one plant take up/spread?

They do take up quite a bit of space once they take off. i planted 5 across the plot and then they stretched out about 5 or 6 feet

is that each or total of all 5?

this makes enough for 5 but the soup is soooooooooooooooooo thick that you can dilute with more veggie stock and get enough for 10!!!!
if it grows, it grows! if it doesnt ,, ah well .. there's always next year. :-)

Anyone got a soup recipe?

Peel, de-seed & cut into 1" cubes a butternut squash (medium size)
Peel & cut into 1" cubes a large potato
Peel & slice a medium to large onion

Fry all the above on a medium heat for about 10 minutes, to sweat, not turn brown.

Add 2 pints vegetable or chicken stock and seasoning to taste (I normally bung some fresh herbs in if I've got any)

Simmer until all the veg are cooked through, blend (I normally save a few pieces of the squash for texture), serve with a swirl of cream and a sprig of parsley.  Sometimes I put in a few chilli flakes if I've had a cold day on the allotment!

2 years ago i bought a squash from asda, saved the seed, planted 5 last year and got about 50 squashes which makes the most delicious soup ever and also made us popular with our allotment neighbours who hadnt grown any! just right for this weather.

Wasn't my fault they were duff seeds I bought!  Yours were lovely though and they kept for ages :)
