I've got mushrooms ....
« on: February 02, 2012, 20:51 »
.... but not where they should be!  :(

In a few containers and planters in the garden I've got small chocolate brown coloured mushrooms growing. Theres a few in the bottom of a clematis, in my dwarf kale and I spotted one earlier in with the broccoli.

The compost thats in them all is from different bags and I've no idea where they've come from .... is it good or bad? I'm not planning on eating them but should I leave them in there or not?  ???

Funnily enough the chestnut mushroom growing kit I have has NEVER ever produced a single mushroom  ::)

Thanks,
PP  :)

There are all sorts of small fungi that grow on woodchip, from spores that just arrive through the air.

Some are poisonous, most are not, but ones like this do no harm.

Interesting to look at though, with their delicate structure   :D

Thanks Sunny!

I first spotted one with a cap about the size of a ten pence piece and the more I looked the more smaller ones I found and thought it was odd.

I get loads and loads of different mushrooms and fungi around my plot - mostly from the wood chippings I put down to cover the paths. All part of the eco-system, but I'm afraid I do get rid of them (just kick them over and bury them) as I have a 2 year old who will eat anything, and it's just not worth the risk! I'm hoping that I'm not depriving too many small animals of their essential winter feed though...

One year, we'd put down loads of straw in the turkey run as it was so wet and muddy.  Afterwards I used the straw as a mulch in the polytunnel.

Then after we'd rotavated it in the ground, we got loads of little mushrooms growing!

Post pictures of your mushrooms, as allotments are prime growing areas for some very tasty specimens indeed!

I can't find the cable for the digital camera and just tried with the one on my phone and you can barely see them but I've just had a look on the Northwest Fungus Groups website and they look exactly like Laccaria Laccata which are edible but very mild tasting.

I won't be eating them just in case, I'll just leave them where they are!

I wouldn't just leave them PP.  When they burst open they'll spread loads more spores everywhere!

I just used to tread mine in with my wellies.  they die quite quickly!

Good point Grannie , they're only in a few planters so it's not a big job to whip them out when I spot them  ;)

I tried to pull some up earlier to have a closer look at but the ones in the curly kale are frozen  ::)

Thanks lots, PP  :)
