Help - duckling escaped into pond.
« on: May 02, 2010, 21:07 »
Hi

One of my ducklings escaped into the main duck run and I found her on the pond absolutely exhausted, I have brought her in dried her off, wrapped her in a quilt on top of a hot water bottle, and put her in front of the fire.

She seems to have perked up, in that she is shivering, which I am taking as a good sign?

Is there anything else I can do?  Should I give her water?  Rub her to get circulation going?

Many thanks in advance.

Jo

Hi jo,
Your duckling is probably still cold thats why he/she is still shivering. What you have done should warm him/her up and have you tried offering him/her any food or water? hope this helped

Sorry Jo, hope she'll be ok. I'm sure one of the experienced duck folks will be along soon with good advice, but it sounds as though you are coping. What about food - has she eaten and drunk anything? Food is always good for warming through. Good luck, Sue

Thanks Chloe & Bonnibean

We are now "cwtching" her to try and get some all round body heat, rather than the hotwater bottle under her, she also has a tin foil blanket, she is looking "perkier" so I am going to offer some food and water now.

Will keep her in a cat basket in the house tonight.

Fingers crossed.

Hi Jo,
I had a similar incident a couple of weeks ago where my white silkie hen fell into my pond. By the time I had found her she was absolutely freezing and I really thought she wouldn't make it. But, I dried her with my hairdryer and then wrapped her in a towel with a hot water bottle and spent the afternoon cuddling her. She eventually stopped shivering and remarkably is fine now!
Unfortunately a few days later, my baby silkie who was my first hatch wasn't quite so lucky. She fell in and I wasn't at home when it happened.
So, my ducks are going ( today) and the pond is being filled in cos I can't cope with losing hens so unneccessarily. I do hope your duckling is okay!

HI

Thanks for the replies.

Sorry to read about your silkies Tania, its so sad when it happens.

The duckling was fine and back on her feet, so to speak, by about 10.15 last night.  She is back in with the other 3 girls today, and its hard to tell which one she is now, it is marvelous how they can recover from what I though was going to be a sad end.
