That made me chuckle! That farmer must be living the high life!  :tongue2: Prices that ive found is between £1 - £2.50. Go for a sunday drive in the countryside near where u live and u find somewhere. Other than that google helps.

Have a look in your local Tompson local or yellow pages for a riding school, they usually have hay and straw bales for sale in their feed stores, we used to pay around £1.50 for straw and £2 for the hay, when we bought it for the rabbits and guinea pigs.

Have a look for breeders in your area, they should be able to help.  Storrs Poultry sell them for a couple of pound.

the nearest ruralish areas to west brom I can think of would be romsley (plenty of farms there). I buy my raw milk from one there, bromsgrove, barnt green, kiddiminster. As chickadee says, theres earlswood or a farm I go to for my straw in earlswood - fulford hall farm @ £1.75 per bale. You can ask them for a fertilizer bag to keep it in too so it doesnt get wet. I store mine outside. If you make a trip, you could get 2 bales & make it worth your while.

probably have to try your local farmers but the price of hay, straw and feeds have shot up dramatically over the past 12 months.
Staffies are softer than you think.

be aware of quality, recently, after a telephone conversation with an advertiser we travelled some miles to a farm for hay at £3 which I was assured was 'good'. it had no hint of green and no decent smell, I felt it had been rained on more than once before it was baled, I walked away. cheap hay can be expensive in the long run, esp. if it causes lung problems from dust and mould spores (humans and animals).

Carla,

There are some decent places to get all of your chicken needs a fairly short drive out from you - Halesowen, Stourbridge or Kidderminster. PM me if you want further details

You could consider some of the straw substitutes that are around. They will come bagged so easy to transport and store. It would be worth asking at some local pet shops to see if they can get them for you the cost of fuel being astonomical now. Even if they are more expensive you could spend a lot driving around for a bale of straw.

I paid £3 a bale this year for horses for barley straw.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

for the record I pay £2.50 for my bale of straw from one of my local stables, the owner of the stables also has a pet shop from which I get me layers pellets from.
Give it a few months and you wil be able to buy it cheap from a certain supermarket no doubt!
Well thats if the farmers can grow it to a uniform colour etc  ;)

A swarm of bees in May is worth a bale of hay! Do you know how much a swarm of bees is worth? tee hee

I asked a nearby horse owner and she gave me a bale of straw and it lasted ages. I had to take her shetland pony for a walk though!

i hope thats for one of the massive round bales you see in the fields because i buy my standard rectangle bales from a farm for a pound a bale!
Will they send it freight to France? That's what I call a bargain. Does the farmer fancy you or something? ::)
