Be prepared for lots and lots of poo.  It's amazing how much they do.

You will need to poo pich daily and if they sleep in the nesting box you will have to change some of the beddig everyday. For some reason mine poo an awful lot at night.

There are disinfectants on the market which are suitable for animal and poultry housing and it would be best to use one of these rather than household disinfectant.

Mites lurk in the cracks and crevices of the coop. Quite a few people on here use a wallpaper scraper to really get all the muck out.  I use Barrier Red Mite Powder weekly on the bedding and monthly on the birds, but this is a preventative, so if you suspect you have an infestation, you need to roll out the big guns.  I've only has red mite in my coop once and Poultry Shield did the trick.

If you are buying products for your birds, I would suggest you invest in Flubenvet wormer, purple wound spray and some beak rings.  The last 2 are just in case you get hens pecking one another or feather pecking and you'll be so glad you were prepared if a problem crops up.

Don't get too hung up on the possible problems.  A good hygene regime, good feeding and just getting to know your birds so you can spot issues quickly will stand you in really good stead  :D

If you click on poultry pages at the top of the page, this site has supplier lists. If there is anything you can't find, just re-post and some-one will know where to get it  :)

GUTTED

Our coop has just turned up and its missing the screws and the instructions. We had a coop delivered just before Christmas and that one was damaged. Faith in online shopping is at an all time low.
