Those blue barrels are often on ebay for a reasonable price, or you could try having a friendly word with the guys up your local municipal tip.
Plumbers merchants might be able to put the word out to their trade users for old water tanks perhaps? Might be worth a go ;)

You don't tell us where you are joiner - perhaps you could add this to your profile - so I don't know if this is relevant, but one of our waterbutts is an old whisky barrel from one of the local distilleries. :)

Main drawback there was that argyllie had to empty it herself first.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Sadly not true. It was already empty and being retired from service.

Thanks for adding your location, joiner. :) There's this thread which you might find useful - the OP isn't that far from you:

Also, farm chemicals often come in 205 litre blue barrels, if you know any farmers or know anyone who does?

The blue plastic barrels can usually be obtained from textile factories where they are used to contain dyes and other chemicals. Cheap plastic taps may be obtained from DIY stores.

The barrels do of course require a thorough rinse before use. To keep my water barrels free from bugs, I regularly add a couple of small drops of Jeyes Fluid.
