Compost Location
« on: April 28, 2009, 10:04 »
I’m planning on making a compost area (got some old fence panels to use) and was thinking about locating it at the top of the plot but its shaded part of the day (afternoon). Would this be OK or does it need to be in full sun.

It will be fine in the shade !

It will do better there than your cauliflowers would ;)

My compost is in the same sort of area – it’s shadowed by trees and nothing would grow there anyway.

Try and keep it away from your seating area too if you have one – don’t want the smell drifting about when you are relaxing!

I put mine under a tree next to the shed. As I thought that I wouldn't be able to grow much there.

Then next door lopped the tree, so my wind break for the shed has now gone! ::)

Now I run  a "loose" compost heap in a sunny area which takes longer to rot down but which makes an excellent spot for marrows, courgettes and cucumbers. It goes undercover in winter and comes out as spring warms up in readiness for planting.  I can wait for the compost as it is a productive extra patch of allotment on an area close to a hedge which might otherwise be a bit of a pig to get into production.

my compst area is in full sun but I have no choice as the whole plot has full sun. Mine is at the bottom of the plot and the shed/patio are at the top.

I've put a couple of builders bags at the bottom corner of the plot one side one sits over a sump drain this corner floods and the soil is very clay so I don't grow anything there. My pallett compost heap is on the other corner which I painted green much to OH amusement.

My garden is at home so I sited compost heap near a path so easy to put kitchen waste on it as we go upto feed the ducks and to put ducks bedding and lawn cuttings etc on it as those jobs get done. Agree with others don't waste the sunny spots but top of a compost heap is a good place for a pumpkin and make heap easy to dismantle and to turn and eventually to wheel compost from onto to plots. Again near paths help.
