Our onions after a terrible start have taken off, they have the leaves that look like vegeman's did (hope I got his user name right )

but when do I know they are ready

Usually ready in late July, when you see the tops starting to go a bit brown or they start flopping over. They're on a cycle similar to garlic which ripens close to the same time and has similar habits. If in doubt, ask a plotting neighbour, but it's usually obvious that the onions' season is over.

When the leaves start to brown and topple over. Probably some time in August depending when planted.

Hi gardening people, may I join this thread with another onion question? I had my onions under clotches to try and keep the wildlife off them but during the recent high winds, one of the clotches broke free and was flapping about. By the time I found what had happened it had decapitated the leaves of a load of the onions down to ground level. Will the onions grow more leaves or should I try planting some more? Am I too late to plant some more?  :nowink:

Last week someone trod on some of my onions - they snapped the greens off near the bulb - i thought that would have finished them off but I am happily surprised to have seen this week that they've carried on growing great guns. :)

Yes, remove the flower stem and use it first as it will not store as well.
Cheese makes everything better.
