Am I doing something wrong?
« on: June 11, 2010, 10:52 »
I have just been to my friends house, she is growing veg in pots, I have mine in raised beds however hers look so much bigger and better than mine (everything) my raised beds are new this year and full of good stuff ( homemade compost, manure etc) comparing the two my veg are pathetic! ( I thought they were doin well  ??? Hers were started same time as mine (and some of the seeds were out of the same packets as we swap) so what am I doing wrong?

Did you also add something like Blood Fish and Bone or Growmore to the soil?

Manure/compost etc give you lovely soil but don't always supply all the required nutrients.
Yours have also been grown in a different environment to hers which can explain the difference....possibly more exposed?

Is the position of the plants the same in respect to the sun?

I have a small shady garden and the plants I raise at home don't look too good at all, in fact I would say very tatty, but as soon as I move them to the south facing allotment with absolutely no shade they roar away and catch up with everyone else's very quickly.

Another consideration is that the compost in pots will heat up quicker than raised beds.

I would go with the temerature as well - is your plot shadad? Are her pots in full sun on a warm patio?
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

Annother factor to consider - is - being greenfingered!! My neighbour over the field seems to do far better than me without all the LTC that I give my plants. I HATE her!!!!! (  :tongue2:  :wacko:I don't really - she's a love!)
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

My guess is that with your friend's veg in pots, she waters more often and likely with some sort of fertilizer to keep the plants happy. It's a more immediate food source, and sometimes down the road, it attracts more pests so don't be too jealous.

I think Trillium might have a point here. I am growing carrots on the allotment and in pots at home. The potted plants are all doing very well with very good germination. Not so on the allotment with reseeding again being the norm.
Because the potatoes are running late I have no room yet for the brasicas. They are also growing in pots and finally in supermarket buckets and they are all thriving.
The common factor is that I fuss over them and water them most evenings, and yes they do have an occasional feed.  The allotment is 5 miles away.
Raised beds by their nature are going to dry out quicker than pots.  Also pots can be moved about and given better shelter.
Possibly they need some TLC.
