I was thinking of putting some kind of light in the coop to try and keep the chooks laying,which is the best?,and also what is the recomended length of time to keep the coop lit?.

I think they need 14 hours of daylight to keep laying.  I prefer to just let mine lay when they want.  They will only lay a certain amount of eggs in their lifetime, so by making them lay all year will make them run out of eggs quicker - if that makes sense!!  Its nice to let them have a rest over the winter and let them recharge their batteries for next spring.   :)
