run lighting advice
« on: September 24, 2012, 13:11 »
First morning in my chicken keeping year that I've had to clean my coop, feed the girls etc just as daylight was appearing - none of us could barely see! I have a small battery operated LED light in the coop and one in the run.....the one in the run is useless, so I am asking if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations for a battery operated set up I can use....possibly with a timer.

I cant leave the coop cleaning til later in the day as my girls sleep in the nestboxes and would therefore be laying their eggs onto poo...

why not wear a head torch to clean their nest boxes out in the dark - also handy for checking for redmites in the dark  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Yes, I will try that thankyou....I also need something that can be left on for an hour or so in the morning or is this just me treating them like my babies..... I leave for work at 7.15am and when we get into the depths of winter, I will be getting them up early to clean out, feed n water etc, but then dont want to plunge them into darkness and leave them to it until the natural daylight arrives around 8am.....it has to be something battery operated though.

How about those solar garden lighting thingys from the poundshops? You could using a hole cutter cut a hole into the side or roof and mount them in with sealant so the soalr panel is exposed to the outside and the led is in the coop. Or failing that just charge them up by your back door and throw them in the coop/run before you leave for work. A wind up torch hung from the cieling would also work well. These are things Ive contemplated doing this winter so not tried and tested but I think they would work in theory.

But I just noticed you said lighting for the run. I would just put a security light on a timer.
