Sicilian Honey Garlic
« on: February 11, 2011, 18:44 »
This is just one of the names for nectaroscordum silicum bulgaricum (also Mediterranean Bells) and I have masses coming up again.
I've always loved the flower, the height and the way it attracts bees by the hundreds (good for my crops!) and was intrigued by the strong garlic/onion scent. Thinking it was edible I have used leaves in salads, stir fries and stews and the kids like to pick them and munch!
We have never had a problem with tummy aches but I wondered if anyone knows how edible they are? I've Googled but all I can find is a recipe for the dried leaves used in Bulgaria.

I did a search for poisonous flower bulbs and this one came up, so I definately would not touch the bulbs.  I can't find a definative answer about the leaves either but personally I would grow another allium I knew was OK for munching on - garlic chives might be a good sub and they are pretty too when they flower.
