Tomato container size question
« on: June 04, 2008, 20:34 »
Hi

I'm trying to decide whether to use grow bags (aided with pot rings) or to use plant pots with compost in to grow my tomatoes (and cucumber and courgettes) in our greenhouse. I wondered what other peoples views were on the pros and cons of each.... I also wondered what size pot would be enough for an average tomatoe plant....

Well i'm using containers to grow tomatoes and cucumbers in at the moment.
There are 10 litre tubs i think, but i'm using old waste paper bins to grow in as well.

In my other mini greenhouse the tomatoes are in a growbag.

All appear fine at the moment though very thirsty.

Just go for it and see what happens, mine have worked do far!

good luck

Nice attitude - always better to try and take pot luck then not try and wish you had :-)

My pots are about 8" to 9" diameter and fairly deep - d'ya think they're big enough ?

Well if you work on the 10 litre's...if you can fill 7 tubs/pots with a 70 litre bag of compost then....Bobs your uncle.

Yep they'll be fine, i even have some cucumber in those pots now and they growing fast.
I use the big bags of compost from b & q to fill mine.

You want to see the massive barrel i have just got for growing pumpkins and squashes, a little experiment thought i'd try. ! My tatties are in an old bin and the stems are enormous.

Old tyres are great for growing toms and spuds in. Also if you can cut the tyres on the rim into a z shape (or serrated v's). Turn them inside out and paint them white, they make great planters.

The bigger the better.

Realistically a 15 litre pot should be OK ,any smaller and they'll just dry out too quickly once the plants get big and then you'll get all the problems with having to soak the compost once it's dried out. :)

Good tip for Tomato growers.

When you plant it...also plant a 3 inch plant pot next to it, angled towards the roots.

On a daily basis, check the level of water in the plant pot. If it is empty, top it up, if it still has water in it and leave it.

It stops all the guess work.

If it's in a pot, then use a two inch plant pot.

Must post this on the dis thread.

Thanks for all the replies - I'll give the pots a whirl and may use a couple of growbags just to compare...  8)

I use grow bags, the new larger one. They are quick and easy. If you are not sure try both methods together and compare results.
