Autumn planting shallots?
« on: October 09, 2011, 16:41 »
Couldn't resist buying some Jermor today - they were being sold loose and I'm a sucker for that. Must remind me of my childhood and buying sweets. :tongue2:

Anyhoo, what are the advantages/disadvantages of planting them now, compared to storing them and planting in the spring?

Ta.

Thanks.

I've decided that, since I still have lot of last years shallots, I'll go ahead and plant these now and plant another lot next Spring. Sort of belt and braces approach. After all, most of the plot will be lying idle so I may as well.

Just remember it will not be 'lying idle' in the spring so don;t fill up with shallots where you need space for other things in the new year --- place them carefully  ;) :D

Agreed. They'll go in next years Allium bed.

They'll have overwintering onions and garlic for company until next Spring, then some more onions, shallots and  spring onions will join them for their summer hols.

I planted my Jermor today.  I planted them this time last year and they grew very well for me.  I love them and grow lots  :)

I'll plant shallots in the spring after plonking them into cells to get them going well. It worked really well for me for the last few years.  ;)

Do the shallots that you grow from seed behave like proper shallots if you plant the bulbs the next year or do they just bolt?

Does seed saved from bolted proper shallots grow true to type?

Do you mean the shallots that split? I've only seen seed sold for things called 'banana shallots' and these produce just one long bulb from each seed. Never seen seeds for 'traditional' (ie splitting) shallots.

The variety is Conservor which claims to be a single bulb shallot from seed. Oops, I've been waiting for them to split  :) It's a half long French type

I bought some sets today of "banana" shallots from Wilko but further research has revealed that they're Vigarmor, which I've grown before

I guess it's because there's little call for them. Increasing stock is easy - simply by saving / using some of the off-sets that grow. Seed, on the other hand, would be much slower.
