Which Shallots are you planting this Autumn?

I've had a look at the shop and the only one listed for autumn is Escalote Grise. Are there others I can plant now?

Also how much earlier are they ready if you plant now rather than in the spring?

I have grown Jermor this year and as got good results with them last year, these are the long ones.

Worth growing over winter as they are very hardy but you can plant up until March and I think they crop around end of July/August. There may be nothing to be gained by planting now, not sure. I dare say someone else will know for sure.  I just like to plant something now, such as shallots, onions and garlic and plant more from about Feb onwards. Belt and braces I suppose so that if something ruins one crop there's still chance for another.  Plus I like to have some overwintering crops as it gives me the chance to get out to the lotty if I've got something growing round there.

Thank you. I was looking at these but got confused as Marshalls said delivery from Jan 09. I have now found and ordered some from Dobies.

Eschalote Grise originally came from northern Afghanistan and can be planted either in the Autumn or early spring. But as you say it is nice to have something in the soil and at this time of year, you don't feel then that is is sitting there going to waste.

Oh thanks for reminding me.  I usually plant jermore at this time of year but I've not even bought them yet

We put in the jermor ones now, they seem to do quite well down here in the "burbs".
They pickle nicely as well :D
