Chicken Poop and Vegetable Patches
« on: September 09, 2011, 13:44 »
Hello

I have 2 raised vegetable boxes (bath sized - made of wood).  I have just cleared both of these and they will now be dormant until next spring.

Does anyone know if I can add the poop from my chickens directly to the soil in the vegetble boxes and mix it in?

I know you are not meant to add uncompsted chicken poop to plants as the nitrogen levels are not good.  But is it okay to add it uncomposted for a couple of months now that there are no plants?

It is going to be about 6 months before I begin replanting in the boxes and am only planning on adding the chicken poop for a couple of months.

Thank you
Clare

That's exactly what I do. Once the plot is cleared of veg, then add the raw chicken poop and leave it for the winter to 'mellow'. In spring it will be ready, but you will need to add some lime to counteract the higher acidity of chicken poop.
