I use Excel, but only because I'm familiar with it and it makes it easy to "draw" my plot to scale, re-size and move the different crops around using "text boxes", add notes/planting dates and so on.

Each year I just copy the previous year's worksheet and start again, so I now have a 10 year record of what I grew where, when and how well, and I always know where to find it (as long as I don't forget to keep a backup copy!)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

growveg isn't a free site though :(

If you already have Microsoft Office on your PC, then it's easy to use Excel  ;)

This is part of my spreadsheet showing the main growing area which is surrounded by paving slabs (represented by the numbered squares round it.) This makes it easy to transfer the plan to the actual site. The white areas are "text boxes" which makes them easy to shift around and resize and notes can be written inside them.

The other beds are also included on the same sheet, as are additional notes as necessary.

As I mentioned before, it's nothing to do with usual spreadsheet functionality, just a handy way of drawing and keeping records.  :)

I've been using MS Visio for a couple of years, nice looking results but without the intelligence or easy compatibility of Excel...

that looks useful, Jayg, I never thought of using Excel like that. What does F/S mean? And did you really sow turnips out in Feb? I thought they couldn't be sown before March.

Ah! F/S = "first show" (i.e. when they first appeared.)

I presume you are looking at "Golden Globe" which are shallots rather than turnips!

I'm on my fourth year of doing this and have taken it one stage further.

Year 1 crops grown in that bed were in black.
Year 2 were in red
Year 3 were in blue
and next year, year 4, are in green.

Once I have the hang of this dang crop rotation malarky I can do away with the colour coding, but I didn't really know what I was doing the first couple of years so just wanted to make sure I didn't grow the same stuff twice.

Now I realise that this spreadsheet/raised beds has taken all the strain out of it and things just move on 3 beds every year as they're all in the right order to do this.

Just one of the ways to occupy myself when the weather's too horrible to get out and play in the mud.
