Other than bait stations and possibly Fen traps, it sounds as though you are doing just about all that you can do.
Incidentally I had another success this morning and caught another killer only five yards away from my chickens this morning.

What size mesh can a rat squeeze through? I bought 1" weld mesh for my run to ensure it would be strong enough to keep foxes out, am I keeping rats out too? I know they can squeeze under doors etc but I have seen evidence of them trying to dig under the coop, does this mean they cant get through the wire? Started laying poison now BTW.

i've switched to raco force paste that has peanut butter olis which the rats seem to love. they come in little sachets which i attach in a length of drainpipe so they can't take them away but eat in the spot.

mine seem to be trap shy, i know where they go even though i tend to sleep at night time and live 3 miles from my allotments, but they're not daft; i shall put force paste on them for a 2 for 1 chance of getting a rat.

rats are wary little things which is why pest control experts devised the term "bait shyness" as the little swine dont take the bait straight off.

The weather has been a bit milder lately, so rats probably arent short of food. I've heard that the poison breaks down in time, so it pays to remove old bait so as not to encourage them or give a non lethal dose,
