would this work?
« on: June 09, 2007, 19:02 »
I was thinking that, instead of turning over a huge section of plot I want for potatoes, I could trim the grass right down, cover that in straw, maybe a bit of horse manure too then cover it with black polythene  :?

I've read about it somewhere, you do the above, then poke holes through to plant your spuds  :?

Would that work?  It would save a lot of back work which I probably wouldn't get done in time anyway.....

Or would I have to dig it all over and put some manure in anyway  :?    If I did, how long before I could plant in the ground?  :?

This year is going to be a very big learning curve for me!!     Thank goodness for this site!!!   :D

growing vege isn't an exact science.  I seem to remember a similar way being described elswhere too, so if you haven't the time or energy in summer heat to dig first then all you got to lose is the cost of the seed spuds as the manure/straw can be used later in the year when you ahve time to dig and black plastic can also be used again, so try it, if it works brill, if it doesn't then you have time to dig for next year.

No Problem chrissiethechippy I've moved it for you.

Try "no dig potatoes" in the search facility, I'm sure you'll find something.

Forgot to say it's a bit late for spuds this year now, but if you cover it now it will help kill no end of weeds, then personally I would remove it about late Sept time for a month or so for new weeds to start growing then dig (or not) and recover.
