The ISA Brown or ISA Warren - is a hybrid chook - a combination of pure breeds, bred together for a specific purpose. As far as I know, Warrens are what you and I would know and recognise as birds used as battery hens.

They are a lovely docile medium brown/ginger bird and an excellent layer - bred for maximum egg production. They are ideally suited for free range conditions, and for small gardens and you should get approximately 325 brown eggs per year.

Sadly I only have 1 Warren left from a batch of 4 that I purchased at 'point of lay' 4 years ago but she is still going strong!

Warens are a very ‘people’ friendly docile bird, ideal for the ‘first timer’ and for people with children. They love interaction with us humans and we've had great fun with them. You will always have company if you start digging in the garden with a Warren.......they appear from no-where and literally sit on the shovel waiting for a worm!

Lovely bird we have had warrens in the past like Luther says they will sit on the fork as you dig    great with the kids etc, and lay for England! I have RIRx LS now and they are nice to not quite as friendly, eat more and definitely noisier

How are your Goldlines laying Richy?  My Goldlines and Amberlinks are now 27/28 weeks old, and I get between 4 and 9 eggs a day, so someone is posibly not yet laying, or they are doing split shifts, one day on one day off!!!!

We've had Warrens before too, nice birds, traditional brown, lovely egg layers.

i have 3 warrens, called 'cow', 'chicken' and 'duck'. they were my first chickens and i absolutely adore them.

they are nosey, friendly and will follow you around the garden. mine will jump up on your lap to see what ive got.

so docile, anyone can pick them up for a cuddle.

fantastioc breed if you have young kiddies as they can get really close to them.

Hi, I've got 6 warrens and they are the most friendly little things. They are very nosey and everyone of them will follow me around. When I do some digging for them, they will jump onto the fork ( and my back). I would highly recommend them.

the missus had thought the old chap had said isa warrens, but when we checked the books we could only find marans, so we thought she'd misheard! so when i posted on here and we came up with ISA browns, we thought we had really misheard him, but it seems she heard right all along :D

they sound good for my purposes - loadsa heggs and good with kids
