Moving Tomato seedlings to the Greenhouse
« on: March 23, 2008, 16:43 »
Hi,

I have seven tomato seedlings growing in individual 3 inch pots on a window sill.

They are all about 3 or 4 inches high now and I want to move them to my unheated greenhouse.
Can this be done now? I read on the Internet that Toms shouldn't go into an unheated greenhouse until late April.

Any help please?

I would say too early yet especially as night temperatures are still very low. Mine don't go in the greenhouse until late April and even then I have a little paraffin heater over night.

I agree with matron, still far too early for an unheated greenhouse. My toms are in my greenhouse but overnight are in a heated propagator. It stays on all day if particularly cold, otherwise it gets turned off during the day.

You could risk it I guess if well insulated with fleece and polystyrene, under, over and round them overnight. Or put them out in the greenhouse during the day (to stop them getting too leggy) and bring them in ovenight to protect from frost.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

we pricked out loads last week and they are in an unheated greenhouse however we are in Cornwall in Cheshire i would say its probably still to cold at night especially this week this cold snap i believe is not going to be in hurry to go so don't risk it
Everyone should grow their own veg and know where their food is coming from even if it is only a one pot on a patio or balcony Grow Something!!

Put a min-max thermometer in there for a few days: tomatoes need a minimum of 15C.

I have had mine in an unheated minigreenhouse for the past 3 weeks. Despite light frost they are still thriving and about 5 inches high.

I put a few layers of fleece over anything tender if I thing the greenhouse temp will fall too much overnight.

I put my set of plum toms in unheated greenhouse. They are sadly no more and I've sown some more - live and learn!!
