French onion seeds
« on: September 25, 2007, 21:48 »
I have been given 2 pkts of seeds by someone recently back from holiday. They are Rouge de Florence & Echalion Figaro, the problem is everthing is written in French. They look more like shallots to me.Could someone please help with sewing dates etc.
I,m glad I was born here in Cornwall, where pasties are out of this world, where the rich saffron cake that the Cornish girls make keeps the hairs on your chest tightly curled.

Echalion would suggest scallion, i.e. Spring onions

Google suggests the Rouge de Florence is a keeper, hence sow under glass in Jan/Feb

Why not type in the text from the packets, we have members who'll surely translate for you?

i got loads of french seed of my neighbour penlee its all "La Semeuse" thats the company, you get a lot more seed in the packet than the ones we get here.
as for the onions I would sow em in jan/feb same as you would with ours.
feed the soil not the plants

I'm wondering if the RF is the same, sold here as Long Red Florence, which is an elongated bulb, any pickies on the packet? That might be b**ls, just a wild guess...

Try this site to help with the translation.  It does translate things literally so you might have to decipher the result a little bit.

That's if the link works...

If it's shallots then it's a different thing, but as Shaun said, you so your onions, when you sow your onions.
