Cunning use for grass cuttings??
« on: August 11, 2008, 11:19 »
As i emptying my cutting box into the green bin i was wondering if it would be a good idea to throw the cuttings into the run for the chooks to stop their little feet getting dirty in the rain? Does anyone do this? Does it turn into a stinking rotting mess after a while?? Thought it might provide some entertainment as well.

If it is fresh then you girls will eat it!!!!!! But do not give them long grass as it can block up the crop.
As to the rotting mess I just remember my father compost heap which was not pleasant.  I am sure someone else  will be here soon to impart there knowledge.

Do grass clippings ferment?

Would this cause a problem for chickens?

if you compost mowings they really help the heap to heat up fast.  You just mix them well in then you don't end up with a smelly mess  :D   Or don't add too many at once.  I sometimes dry them off before adding them, if the sun is shining that is

I've just chucked mine on the compost heap, about 6" thick all over in the hope of heating it up again really quickly. Then I'll stir it round after a few days.

I didn't put it in with the chooks because it was a bit long and they will eat it in minutes. All of it.

I suspect this caused crop problems a few moths ago, so i don't like to do it now but if you think it's short enough and it is fresh, then treat them !  :)
