Peas
« on: April 24, 2012, 12:05 »
I sowed a small tray of oasis, and yesterday 100 kelvedon.  I have left sowing peas a bit late.  I have took DD's advice and not resowing same varieties successionaly, therefore I would like to do one more variety, can anyone recommend that will fit in with what I am already growing.

Many Thanks
Amanda

You're not too late with pea sowing, I've only just finished mine!

It's not so much not to sow the same variety successionally, but as they tend to catch each other up, different varieties sown at the same time are more likely to give you a succession.

Try Hurst Greenshaft, that's a good, popular, readily available variety.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Sorry to hijack but the OP might need to know the answers too.

Do mice still nibble peas once they have germinated and are poking out of the soil?

And at what stage (if any) do pigeons leave them alone?

Forget mice once they've germinated.

My peas are only safe from pigeons once they get about 6" high and then only to flowering times. Once the pods start to set, they're at them again.

For that reason, I net all year once the stakes have gone in.

Huh, tell that to the mice on my veggie bed. They carefully snipped off the sprouts, ate the seeds and left the sprouts lying on top of the soil. I now have a roll of 4mm wire mesh and this weekend I'm going to build the mother of all tunnels to sit over my third attempt at sowing my Alderman peas. This is war

Last year, they didn't dig mine up either. This year they've clearly declared war on my pea growing attempts.

It doesn't help on the plot, but we've got x 5 the above protection at home!

Problem is they keep getting delivered to the back door step!

yes mice got mine and my broad beans in the same way. first year ever for mouse damage. I resowed with oil soaked seed and sowed deep, covered the surface with coarse black pepper . seems to be fooling them so far.
