Brussel's question
« on: September 01, 2011, 20:13 »
Hi.  I am trying sprouts again (after a dismal effort last year :(), but this time we have purple brussels', which look fetching, but have not yet produced any little sproutlets on the stem.....
Am I doing something wrong? I keep the bed moist and caterpillar-free and speak gently to them, but it looks as if we'll be feeding the hens on stalks again, instead of ourselves this winter

I am also growing the reddish coloured sprouts for the first time and the plnats are huge, but, like your, have no sign of any sprouts.

But I think they are not an early variety so am not too worried --- yet

Mine didn't do much until Octoberish. Then they were crushed by a flying greenhouse. But that's another story.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I don't know what variety you're growing, but I grew "Falstaff" a few years ago. The plants were very tall, but the sprouts disappointingly small. You don't get much idea of scale from a photo on a seed packet!

I don't like sprouts to start forming too early in any event as they can easily blow if the weather's warm.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That's a reassurance DD -- small sprouts will be OK, blown ones a disappointment  :D

(These are a variety called Red Bull)
