Help! me beans have keeled over with brown spots!
« on: February 26, 2007, 22:33 »
Ok, im worried now - after the last frost me broad beans had fallen over. OK thinks I, after asking on here, they just need support. Now however i find the stems that fell over have gone all black just above the soil, and the leaves are covered in small brown spots.

The veg expert book says this is a disease, but theres new shoots coming up from the same plants roots that are unaffected. Could it just be frost damage? They are under a homemade poly tunnel and during that frost the ends were fastened down. The sides are held down by being in the dirt. I wonder could i have effectively suffocated them?

don't spray with anything nasty, if they are sending up fresh unaffected shoots from the same plants let 'em carry on, it sounds as though they'll recover and give you a good crop.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

I wont tell the ministry anything! (they never told me anything)

hmm, bit of conflicting advice there. I will take a look at the specs for the spray Muntjac before i decide. But im no organic gardner, so have no problems with using chemicals
