My top lady is crowing this morning, not a full cock-a-doodle doo crow, but more than the usual 'look at me ive just laid and egg and am going to let the neighbors know about it' racket that they usually make!

Has anyone else ever had a Hen crow?

It happens more than you think!

With the lack of a cockerel the top hen sometimes takes on the role herself!  There are even cases where physical features start to emerge buy obviously there would never bee any breeding from them

me and the OH were stood in the kitchen totally perplexed! thanks for clearing that up min, as long as she doesn't grow spurs and attack me everytime i go out into the garden..............

My top girl, Nelly crowed like a cockerel with a sore throat.....AND grew spurs. She didnt have them when she came out of the battery farm, and within a year she had one on each leg. She still laid and never became agressive towards me..but she definately had gender issues

some hens do grow spurs and still lay eggs - I have one

The thing to watch out is...do you have any chicks?

This happened to me - I bought home a Cochin called Mabel, (named after the old lady we bought her off) and she was fine for the next few weeks, but suddenly she developed a crow, and it got louder and louder until it was like a cockerel.

Mabel's name never got replaced, but she was the father of one very happy chick, April who was a black pekin, like her mother, and they got on perfectly.

So watch out

i was going to get some hatching eggs for my kids so they could watch them hatch etc, but hearing some of the stories on here and other places about ending up with cockerals, i decided against it!
