Blight on our potatoes
« on: June 09, 2010, 20:50 »
Bad bad times. Just got back from the allotment. We have blight on our Vivaldi pots. Hadn't sprayed them as thought it was too early. Will know better for next year.

None of the other varieties look to be affected yet so fingers crossed.

Waiting for the rain to stop so we can spray the others.

We have plenty more pots (we've grown 17 varieties!) so can cope with losing the 2.5 rows of Vivaldi. Worried about the others though.

Hope no one else suffers

Yep, pretty sure. We've had one of the allotment experts take a look too and he says it's blight.

Weather conditions do seem right for it.

I very much doubt that it's blight yet.  There is only one reported case in the UK and it's up in the North of Scotland.

The first outbrakes are usually in outgrade piles on potato farms.

Any ideas if it isn't blight? I will try and take a photo tomorrow and post it.

There were black and brown patches all over the leaves. One of the plants had collapsed and had a black stem on the haulm.

Having a look in the gardening expert. Wondering (and hoping) if it could be something else?

It could be blackleg.  There's been some reports of it here in the last few days.

Had just been reading about blackleg. Tattie Bogle says that the one that fell over looked like it could be blackleg.

The other plants it is just the leaves though.

I'll try and post some pics tomorrow.

Fingers crossed!

Aunt Sally, the link you posted fits for the collapsed plant. I'm pretty sure that one is Blackleg. The question is will this have spread to the other plants and should we be thinking about removing them? According to the links Vivaldi are very susceptible, does this mean the other potatoes on the next rows should be ok? They look fine so far. Thanks for the advice.

Picture of our potato. It looks similar to the Magnesium deficiency in the Veg expert book.

Panic over?
