blight resistant potatoes?
« on: June 09, 2012, 15:59 »
hello I am currently growing potatoes and have got 2 different varietys. One of which is a sarpo mira potatoes blight resistant breed according to the packaging.
But upon inspecting them i have notice several black spots on the foliage.

after carefully looking at the rest of the plant and seen no other sign of of black spots except on the leaves: it has left me puzzeled as to what it is?

As well as this in a different location where i have planted potatoes i have notice that something has started to eat the leaves. I think it mite be a type of fly as i have seen black and green fly on them. any tips how to stop the leaves getting attacked?

I would appreciate any help on this matter. Thank you :)

welcome, any chance of a photo, and can you please alter your profile to show a location, it helps when answering questions

There isn't much blight about unless you live in the SW, so I doubt it is that!

My understanding of the Sarpo varieties is that although they can get blight they are very resistant to the effects of it (having said that, there is very little blight reported so far this year unless you live in the south west.)

Aphids are sap suckers and don't eat leaves - slugs sometimes do though...............
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I had a huge crop from my sarpo mira, the leaves stayed green for months and the spuds just got bigger and bigger.
Some of mine were affected by bacterial rot, however.
On the whole I was very pleased with them.

I always grow Sarpo Mira, "in case". They always give a good crop, but I acknowledge that they are not the tastiest potato.

However! I'm still using last year's crop and I'm in danger of completing the full cycle this year and having earlies ready to use as they run out.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
