Advice please, chickens not getting on.
« on: August 08, 2008, 12:13 »
Hiya, we had 6 chickens, 1 had to be put down 4 weeks ago, we got 2 to replace it as weve tried introducing 1 before and it takes forever for them to get on.
The old 5 have taken a big dislike to 1 of the new ones, its been over 3 weeks now and new 1 has a scabby head where they pin her down and get her, shes escaped over a 5 ft fence ( with wing clipped) several times, last night we couldnt find her in the run, eventually found her in a 15cm gap under the hen house. I think they arnt  going to get on and we might have to permenantly seperate her and her friend in a seperate house/run, OH thinks that we should keep with it and they will leave her alone eventually.
Advice please as im not going to sit back and let my other girls bully her to death.
Many thanks in advance.

Have you tried smothering her in either Tea Tree cream or Purple horsey spray. They hate the taste of either and it puts them off pecking.....................normally. Good luck
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

The tea tree sounds good, stupid question but is the tea tree cream for animals or do you use one thats for humans?
Ive seperated her and her friend today, theyve got the garden, the others have got the run, loverly to see her not stressed, shes just enjoyed herself the whole day.

The reason Jellyhead suggested Purple spray is because Chickens are attracted to the colour red!!! By some coincidence that is the colour of blood!!! Purple spray hides the redness.  This may stop the others being attracted and may top unwanted attention.
