During the cold weather I got into the habit of feeding my chucks mixed corn rather than layer pellets. At the time they were not laying however we are getting one egg a day now (don’t know if it’s the same hen?). The eggs are fine. Conscious that I should really be feeding them pellets (so I have read) I’ve tried to wean them off but they don’t seem to consume so much pellets as they do corn. I’ve now settled on a 50/50 mix..... however it’s always the pellets that are left over! Do I need to be overly worried about this? What are the benefits of pellets over corn? Should I take them off mixed corn all together?

Also, whilst I’m on the subject of their diets, mine aren’t bother about the kitchen scraps but they do love their meal worms!!

I would just feed them just layers for a few days - if there is nothing else on offer they will eat them. The corn is supposed to be just a treat and they can live without it - it is their equivelent of chocolate and given a choice I would choose chocolate over things that are good for me anyday just like your chickens

I agree with Joyfull, pellets have a  lot of protein, vitamins and minerals in that corn hasn't, and if you give them a mix, they just pick out the bits they like, the corn!

It may not show in their eggs now, but it will eventually!

then you see corn as choc'
you will know when to give
them corn.............only
after an when they are eating
proper food !   a treat......

My hens get layers pellets all day plus 20g of mixed corn per bird half an hour before locking up time. If i need to check them over or to spray  for mite etc they get 6 maize kernels afterwards. As soon as i stand by the maize tin they form a queue.

Thank you all for your advise. I'll get them back on to a stick layer pellet diet in the morning.
