Your favourite rhubarb
« on: September 08, 2011, 13:46 »
I am thinking of getting some rhubarb so I would like to know which are your favourites for flavour.

I have checked the threads and found lots of info on cheap rhubarb and rhubarb recipes, but no recommendations for variety. I've also read variety descriptions from suppliers but, of course, they all claim to be the best!

Looking forward to hearing your views  :)

I think most of us grow what we found on our plot, or the piece given to us by a plot neighbour. Who knows what variety they are

I must admit when one plot holder passed away there was a scramble to get a small piece from his huge rhubarb bed....... it was the earliest on the site ;)

Same here, Mum.

The stuff on my plot came from my mother's garden, who got it from her father.

Regarding the early stuff, Mrs Digger's is the same, it's ready before anyone else can even force theirs. It came with the plot and I can just envisage the scramble now!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My favourites are......Timperley Early, Victoria, and Gaskins Perpetual. I have a couple of plug plants of Gaskins Perpetual if you would like some. It's a fast growing variety.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

As a rhubarb fan I have several varieties...favourite is Cawood delight, although it does not crop heavily.Deep red stems and fine flavour.
Timperly early and Red champagne also do well.
On my plot,Victoria,a favourite with many, produces heavy crops...but of rather green stems...not a variety I intend to keep.
