Favourite tip?
« on: March 25, 2011, 22:07 »
As a relative new-comer to this growing lark, I wonder if any of you have a favourite tip to share?

I'm always spotting stuff I could/should/ought to be doing, but what's going to make it easier/ more fun/ more productive on the plot?

Looking forward to some good replies - always up for a laugh, too!  Chrysalis

Do what suits you best but be prepared to learn from your mistakes as well as your successes.  ;)

Only grow what you really like to eat.  Be aware of how much growing space your crop is going to take.  Ask your plot neighbour what they have found works best in that particular location.
Cheese makes everything better.

Totally agree with Ice about asking neighbours advice on what best suits your location but in contrast to that I would say try experimenting too. As well as growing standard varieties (eg boltardy beetroot), I would also plant a few of a different type. The seeds don't cost too much and you never know if another variety would be better unless you try. And lets face it, it will be another year before you have the chance to have another go, so why not have two or three goes in one year

Not a huge amount of that around during the growing season.  ::)

When all else fails, read the back of the packet as well as looking at the pretty picture on the front.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Don't start as early as everyone else seems to ... only the ones that have have said that they have,  whereas the ones that haven't haven't said that they haven't ...

slow and steady, do a little each day in stead of going mad all in one day, it's hard to enjoy it when your whole body hurts

I have  :D

"you're growing food - not art."

It took me a very long time to actually understand that - even now I forget occasionally.

Keep a look out for ants on your plants, they are easier to spot than the harmful bugs they are visiting.

Some of these are great (especially the yellow snow, I'll try and remember!).  keep 'em coming!!

One of my favourites is: remember to sit and look at the garden sometimes, preferably with a glass of something or a cuppa in one hand...

Blimey DD thats a bit radical  :D :D.

Can I add a caveat

But don't always believe the sowing guide start time shown.
Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip
