Peas
« on: May 12, 2010, 16:47 »
Have discovered that one of my raised beds is infected with wire worm and all the peas that I sowed there have been eaten!   Am I to late to plant more (in another bed obviously)?
I have a pair of secateurs and I'm not afraid to use them!!

It's not too late, but later sown peas run a greater danger of being infected by pea moth.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Fleece is the organic way, but it has to be moth tight - no gaps! There will be no problem until the flowers start to appear on the peas.

The pea moth emerges June to August, peaking late June to mid July.

Pea moths lay their eggs at the base of flower buds and when the maggots hatch they burrow into the small pods and feed on the peas. Once the pods are formed the maggots cannot burrow into them. It is then too late to protect them.

Cover as soon as you see the first flower buds forming. Once flowering is finished the cover can be removed. I prefer enviromesh to fleece. It is easier to take off, it is not blown by the wind and it lets plenty of air through.

When you remove the cover the pigeons will find them. Either leave the cover draped on or net them.
