We are sure when watching a program that the orchard grower said you can't grow Golden delicious or Granny Smith in this country.  But they seem to be for sale in this country.  I wonder if he meant commercial groweres don't grow them here as I did read it was difficult to get a good crop.

What do you think.

You can grow them, but it's really not worth it unless you get a really exceptional summer as the taste won't be anywhere as good as the shop bought fruit that is grown in warmer climates. (According to 'The Fruit Expert' book)

ah ha.  That would be it then. OH has been telling everyone you can't grow them here after seeing prog, glad he didn't make a mug of himself then.
