Possible dislocated wing
« on: April 10, 2012, 22:23 »
My Pekin Bantam hen has, what appears to be, a dislocated wing; she looks as though she is holding an egg underneath it.  She was in the pen on her own and I really don't know what happened, her sister is very broody at the moment but that's another subject.  On checking her later in the afternoon she looked as though she was holding the wing very oddly.  I have checked it very gently and she doesn't like it so I've left well alone.  Is this something a Vet will be able to sort out?  A friend, who keeps chooks, has said leave it alone, to xray may mean she dies under anaesthetic, but the dislocation will heal and not really cause her any problems.  Help please???  :(

I would take her to the vet to get it checked out.  My girl was attacked by a fox and her wing was injured and I'm so glad that I took her as the vet was able to reassure me that it would either heal within a week or he could remove it with no detriment to her.

I'm pleased to say that after a painkilling injection and antibiotics she was just fine.  The birds use a muscle to hold the wing up close against the body, and if she's injured then she might be finding it painful to hold the wing against her side

If you look on here, there is a Sticky of a list of recommended poultry vets all over the country so please check it out and I'm sure there'll be a vet near you

My hen wasn't x-rayed at all  :)

Thank you very much, I will look for a Vet close by from the list and get her checked, fingers crossed it is minor.

While you are trying to find a vet you could possibly use some sport bandage, the type that is not sticky but sticks to itself (Tesco and Morrisons do their own make of this for best value).  If you could put it round her to hold the wing in a better position without binding her good wing.  This should take some of the weight off and aid healing.

Hope you find a good vet soon.

Thanks, Vet appt for Friday with a vet who specialises in Birds, will update when I know what the situation is for anyone else for future reference.  Have to say I'm reluctant to touch it for fear of making the situation worse, best left to a professional maybe.

I couldn't believe what I saw this morning, let her out of the coop and the wing was fine, I really don't know what happened, I can only assume that anything that may have popped out of place, popped back in again.  Will keep a watch on it though.

That is great news.  It might have popped back in if she has tried to flap on to a perch or some thing similar.

Maybe she just rested up and now she's had time to recover. She could have had a knock to it which was painful

Just keep an eye on her for a bit  :)
