Ground too wet for digging but all the snow has gone so if it stays dry this week I'll be starting work on clearing the area where the greenhouse will be going soon.

For today though we braved the gale force winds for a quick hour and trimmed another few feet of the tall weeds and laid another load of card down.

Snow has gone and for some reason that escapes me for now, the area to dig now looks twice the size from before the snow fell!   :D

Did a little more clearing and joined the allotment association - realised what I missed out on last year now!
Acquired a third of a plot in January 2011 which was extended to three quarters in December 2011. Managed by myself and my 6 year old son.

I've been and watered the seedling and garlic in the greenhouse this morning. I planted shallots in compost filled seed tray.

Planted out 2 dozen garlic cloves saved from last year's crop.

Snipped off some dead leaves from the strawberries.

Found out why my glazed (enamelled?) terracotta bird bath was empty - it's cracked nearly all the way round and is about to fall to bits.  >:(
Latest frosts have no doubt done for it, but I've probably had it about 5 years so I suppose it's not done too badly, although the birds won't be too happy until I find a replacement.

Decided it was colder than I thought it was so came back into the warm.  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

decided the chicken plot could move to the dreaded mares tail patch so spend 3 days stripping down fences and sheds to move the entire thing 30 metres and build it all back up again lol...

busy marking out plots ready to turn over.

tommorows job ..demolish another shed and make a greenhouse base for its replacement.

Between yesterday morning and today, I've cleared off any weeds and forked over the potato bed and added general fertiliser.
Also forked over the onion bed and added a potash rich general fert.

It has been very pleasant up at the allotment, very mild for February, in fact more like a late March sort of day and the ground has dried quite nicely now and breaks up beautifully.

Also came back with :
3 white beetroot
1.75lb Cooking radish
and a handful of leeks
In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.

Cut down another strip of tall weeds and made a frame for the square foot bed out of old buddleia prunings. Sowed some broad beans and put out the fire my neighbour had left burning  :tongue2:

I've been to the allotment this afternoon to make sure it's all ready for the tractor coming tomorrow to plough it,I've been waiting ages for the soil to dry out enough!
After shifting a pile of soil (12 full barrows) and spreading it about,I had a look around at the bits of rubble and bricks that were all over and sunk into the surface and filled about 7 or 8 barrows that I've piled up in a corner. It took me approx 3/4 of an hour to round up the detritus,God knows how much there is in total  I reckon it will take me a very long time to get it rubble free :(
I think it must have been used as a brick yard before I got it
It's better to burn out than to fade away !!     ;)

After a 3 month absence (due to back injury), I have been down to my plot today. Pulled up a load of beetroot that had been left in, got some curly kale and leeks for tea, planted raspberry canes, cleaned the greenhouse glass and finally got my shed door to shut properly  :). Even though I wasn't there long, it was cold and windy and my back is aching now, I thoroughly enjoyed it. So nice to be back outside in the fresh air and I am so looking forward to next month to start getting things planted.
