Repackaging bulk seeds
« on: December 30, 2012, 21:30 »
I succumbed to buying some seeds in larger than average packets (from the commercial arm of Kings Seeds) and thought I would split them into smaller amounts.
Should I vacuum pack them (I got a 'food saver' vacuum packed for Christmas) or in to sealed paper envelopes?   They are currently in the original packaging that is either sealed plastic bags or sealed, foil-lined plastic-coated bags. I intend succession sowing so thought that sealed smaller amounts would be better to store.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

What seeds are they?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I just fold my packets up and keep them in an airtight tin.

Don't believe in making life difficult!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I don't think any of those need any special conditions.

Some info here on seed storage times

Doesn't matter what it's made of, if what you're storing is dry, as long it's airtight. You get problems if you try and store self-save seeds that are slightly damp.

I'd probably be more correct in saying I store in a nearly airtight container. It's a PG tips tin!

I've seed in there that are about 7 years past their sow by date that are still giving me nearly 100% germination.

I really don't think you need to go to such lengths as vacuum packing. The seeds you buy in the first instant aren't.

Thanks Yorkie and DD.
I've currently got the seeds stored in the garage in a plastic storage box with air holes. It's got a lid but isnt absolutely airtight. I do have a large metal tin. Should I use that instead?

I'd go with the metal tin. Not only will it keep the seeds drier but it will stop rodent grazing which is worse than rotten germination.

So as long as the container is airtight it is Ok whether plastic or metal?

i`m inclined to think the temp has more of an effect anyway, ive bought seed from the seed sale that have been in the centrally heated garden centre all year and hardly any of them have germinated!
i just keep mine in my tin in the shed and they seem to fine.

Seeds are still live objects and heat will affect them like anything else. If you have somewhere that stays relatively cool and dry then you've got a good spot.

As for plastic or metal, if you know 100% that you've not got rodents anywhere, then go for plastic, but metal tins will give you 100% peace. I've heard of too many people who found many of their seeds nibbled when rodents discovered the treasure trove.
