Tree root in my veg bed
« on: July 21, 2009, 21:32 »
Hello all,

would like some advice regarding a large tree root I have found in my veg bed. It's from the plum at the rear of my plot. The bed is now vacant after lifting onions from it and I plan to plant cabbage there this weekend

Its about 3ft down.

Shall I leave it ? Best advice please

Thanks

Tony

I would either take the tree out, or leave the roots well alone. I've got a prunus pissardii, the red plum, in my (flower) garden, and every time I dig I manage to damage a plum root: CATASTROPHE ! at each wound it sends up 3 or four young plum trees (suckers).
If the roots are very deep, it shouldnt dry out the ground too much, except under the tree, of course.
Have you got plums, at least?

3 feet deep?  now I know some folks like to double dig but that would only take you to a max of 2 feet!

Surely if it's 3 feet down it won't affect your veg at all, other than soaking up moisture so perhaps you need to water that bed a bit more!?

3 feet indeed!

I was wondering how you found it!

(Trying to dig out mare's tail?)
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I found it when I decided to level my plot. It is under a slighty raised area at the rear of the lot. I planted onion sets early this year, just to get a crop going and the area didn't need much work doing to it.

Now after pulling up my onions I thought I would level the area and plant some cabbages & cauli's.

As for mares tail.................If I could eat the stuff it would feed an Army !!!!! Horrid stuff, it is in every bed and I now have the joy of bind weed amongst my spuds !.........

All fun eh !
