thinning out lettuce
« on: May 22, 2007, 21:22 »
:D

Ive planted some lettuce seeds and they have just all come through. At what point should i start thinning them out - now or when they are much bigger ?
A slug is for life not just for the allotment

Normal practice is to sow thinly and then transplant into final position when they are large enough (1" or 2 approx).

 I do that all the time (early season anyway).  Were they hardened off?  Watered in?

yup to both... went all limp and that was that.. they were about 6 inches high and I think I left them grow too big before transplanting..

Reckon so - (1" or 2 approx) as I mentioned above.

6" lettuces should be transplanted onto the plate!    :D

... for little gem or cos or any of the head forming lettuces, I sow one or two per cell.

But for the other really leafy one likes lollo rosso I sow about four or five per cell and plant them out as a lump ... cut a few leaves from each clump and keep myself in lettuce for weeks ...  :D

My little gems went limp and looked dead when I transplanted, left them though for a couple of days and they seemed to pick up.
