non flowering Amaryllis
« on: February 13, 2012, 14:10 »
Hi , Can anyone tell me what Ive done wrong. I have 3 Amerillas bulbs ( i think thats how you spell it ) they flowered the first year I bought them. Then as per instructions I cut back the green once it started to die back. They came back into leaf this winter so I was looking forward to them flowering again for this Christmas, but nothing  :( only green leaves albeit very healthy looking. not sure why no flowers can anyone help please?

You're thinking of amaryllis  :D

Some folk have a way with them, the rest of us don't. Mine will put up a leaf or two during winter, which then quickly dies off. But they like being outside in summer (with some fertilizing) where they'll put out more leaves and on occasion I get a flower, but not often. I suspect that they're mostly a one time bloom bulb for the majority of us.

Don't give up, I find that they usually flower in the summer with the leaves coming first then the bud - I think those that are bought for the Christmas flowering are "forced" to flower in a couple of weeks from planting.

You need to feed them when in flower & afterwards to build up the reserves to flower again.
