Question for Garlic experts
« on: July 23, 2011, 10:07 »
Hi all,
I have been growing garlic for the past 6 years & really enjoy growing them.
I have let 6 garlics go to flower and i have noticed the flowers have very small galic shaped bulbs on them.
Has anyone here ever grown them ? as i will be trying, but would like to know when to plant them ( before or after winter ?).
i realise it will take a few years for them to be of any size.
Many thanks
John  ;)

It sounds as though you are describing the scapes. They can be planted but take so long to grow anything worthwhile that it is hardly worth the time taken.

The bits that are growing within the "scape" are called "bulbils".

As Argyllie say, they take a while to get anything worthwhile, 2 years from planting them now, in fact.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Some Alliums produce bulbils and are a way of increasing your stock, which is what I think you are looking to do. As soon as they will come away easily from the flower head, pot them up into 3" pots until  they are large enough to plant out. Good luck with this, I'd be interested in knowing how they develop next year.

I find that planted bulbils need 3 years before they're a useful size, unless you prefer them small, hence 2 years for growth.

They are a faster way to produce more garlic as head will give you up to 6 plants, bulbils in a few years can give you up to 15 or so, but is it worth the wait by comparison?
