Best to cull in the morning pepsi100 this way their last feed has been digested overnight.  Make sure they have access to water and no food from the night before.

I have used a broom handle and the wall mounted dispatcher and both methods as said are fine if done correctly.

Craig as mine free range they kept laying and hatching all over the fields and hedgerows and I ended up with too many birds. Most of these also slept in the trees and trying to catch the cockerels was a right old pain and then I ended up culling 15 cockerels in one day - and my husband won't eat a bird that he has said hello to  ::)
Staffies are softer than you think.

If you have a safe place to put it, this makes a good shelter for raising a few birds that dont need or you dont want  to perch.

Its just a piece of what we call pig netting, cut so it has spikes to dig in the ground, a piece of board for the back and covered in plastic feed bags. The conifer branches help keep it shaded. A nice layer of straw on the floor makes it comfy and i put another bag over the entrance at night if its a bit blowy.

That looks great Spana and it would work for ducks just as well.

Culled my young Welsummer cockerel this morning as he was getting too good at crowing!!  He is the biggest bird I have done up to now (working my way up to the turkeys).  I decided not to pluck so will leave him hanging for a few days and then skin and prep.

His feathers would make a nice decoration on a hat so I may keep some for future use.

You're right, I've reared literally hundreds of ducklings in them.

As for the cockerel feathers, i wonder if there's a way of curing the skin with the feather attached, like you would a rabbit pelt.

Yuk, the thought turns my stomach, the smell would be awful.

Rabbit skins and fox tails were very sought after in the 60's-70's

I think that fishermen use the cockerel feathers for fly fishing (why they wanted to catch flies beats me though) :)
It's all about the journey, not the destination
