Advice for novice Rhubarb grower
« on: August 16, 2010, 07:33 »
It is the first year for me growing rhubarb. I need advise on what to do with it. I have read that it is ok to take a couple of stalks off. But not sure.

Do I cut it back in the autumn or just let the leaves wither and die back.

I wouldn't touch it at this time of year. Likely to be tough & full of oxalic acid.

It'll die back naturally.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I am newish to the wonders of rhubarb too,i still have about 10 stalks left on mine, which is about 3 or 4 yrs old,so is it ok to carry on picking them?

This year the stalks havent been as thick as last year either,is there a reason for this,i have had quite a few pickings though this year.

General advice is not to pick after June to allow the roots to build up for next year. Let them die back. Either remove the dead leaves or push them tidily into the middle. Give it a good mulching with rotted manure or compost. A handfull of growmore will help in the Spring.

After it has died back, tidy up the mouldy bits onto the compost heap and then give it a good mulch - it will be twice as big next year.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
