Can I sow turnips now or not?
« on: August 19, 2011, 21:53 »
I've seen conflicting advice in different places. Some say it's ok to sow now, some say not after July, and some say August is ok but only if you want to eat the leaf rather than the root. Which is right?

And how much depth of soil do they need? Would I get away with sowing them in 6" soil depth, or do they need more than that?

You can certainly sow turnips now, and get some decent small sweet roots too  :)

Six inches of soil is probably just about enough, but they would do better with another couple of inches really, as that long root off the swollen part can go on down

Thanks for that. I can give them more depth, just wondering which bed to put them in. Any recommendations on variety? And anybody know if mice eat them? They've scoffed every single one of the carrots and parsnips I was growing.

I don't have a problem with mice eating root veg , just pinching bean and pea seeds earlier in the season.

Turnip variety I usually grow is purple top milan, which is very reliable,  but am also trying oasis this year. It is supposed to taste like melon (?). Eldest grand daughter bought me the seeds, so I had to plant them

T&M website:Turnip: Oasis by Thompson and Morgan seeds. If you have never tried to grow this vegetable, you must try Turnip Oasis. Can be picked at any size with a surprisingly sweet juicy flavour similar to a melon. Turnip Oasis is delicious when eaten raw like an apple, or grated and added to salads

You'll have to let us know if they live up to the blurb  ;)

Growveg had an article in their latest newsletter saying now is the perfect time to plant turnips. Lots of useful info in there too:
