I have got a few pumpkins on the go, still in pots - hoping to cash in on the large number of children in my street!

My question is, how much space should I allow for them to grow to their full size?

I let mine go at least 4 feet in any direction they chose. That's 64 sq feet per plant.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Can I ask another Q, when you let the pumpkins roam, do the send out little bits that root, i.e. is it best for them to roam over soil or can they roam over weed fabric or plastic?

The pumpkins my kids have growing have sent out roots off the long trailing stems and they are on soil, not mulch.

Hmm methinks this may not have been such a well thought out plan!

Well I have an empty bed ready for next year, that will hold one - do they respond well to being trimmed back?

mine go over black sheet mulch  :D

I let mine ramble through the spuds

You  can trim the growing points on once you've established how many fruits you want to let develop

I have two pumpkins growing in a 12foot square area ~these two pumpkins are rampant and taking over this space fast !! I have started to circle the growth of the stems to contain it

Wow so glad this was asked here.. I have one seedling.. after planting 4 indoors (in pots) and 8 outdoors... i know.. well I like pumpkins :)

I had no idea how huge they'd grow though.. my seedling is 6 massive leaves after 5 days out of it's pot.. ready to be hardened off and put in the ground me thinks. :)

tomorrow.. i'll sort out a big enough bed! lol

Wow Jen, when did you sow your pumps?! I sowed mine at the beginning of May (5th/6th?) and planted them out in June, once the frosts were well past. They are nowhere near as far on as yours! They are butternut squash 'metro' and 'crown prince' pumpkin. Their leafy growth covers an area of probably about a foot to to a foot-and-a-half squared each with one stem making off out on its own. No flowers and definitely no fruit yet! Can anyone tell me if I'm likely to get anything off of them? Sorry to hijack the thread a bit!

"The Guardian"

Sow: April
Plant: May - June
Harvest: July - October

---> This seems to be the general opinion - based on a quick "google it" approach
