Injured chook, advice needed
« on: May 07, 2010, 18:21 »
Hi. A fox got a couple of my girls leaving amongst the carnage one injured and I would appreciate some help on how to care or her. She doesn't seem able to stand, her legs move but she keeps falling to one side even though she can move her legs. Is she *just* in shock - I've wrapped her up in a towel and placed her in a cat basket in a quiet corner. I can't see anything wrong with her, but this is my first time looking after hens. I've got her to drink a bit but so far she's not eaten anything today. Oh, she's pooping just fine.

Can someone out there please help?

have you felt her bones (legs feet etc) for any warm parts - she could have broken them or even her wing.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Have a really really good look at her.  Look all through her feather to make sure there are no breaks in the skin.  Foxes have dirty teeth and these injuries would go sceptic very quickly - Vet treatment needed.

Gently have a look at her wings and legs.  Feel the bones to make sure there are no breaks.  Look for bruises.

If she doesn't start to stand properly then ...  Vet would be my choice.

Good luck, let us know how she goes !

Hi.

Thank you for your help.

I had a closer look but can find no broken legs and nothing looking infected. She is starting to talk to me a little bit, is drinking by herself and appears (a little bit) perkier an sitting up. I'm going to give it over night as she looks like she is improving, but keeping her in the kitchen so she is close to hand and if she feels up to it she can go for a walk. (The floor is washable.)

Of course if she's not better then I have a very good local vet.

As long as she has no puncture wounds or broken bones she should recover well.

Keep us updated :D

It could just be shock.  let's hope she will be okay, but be prepared, chooks can die from a shock like that.  But I hope she pulls through!

I would ike to say Thank You to everyone who passed on their words of wisdom.

Unfortunately, Rosie didn't make it through the night. Even though we'd only had her for just over a fortnight it has been like losing a member of the family, which is why it's been a while before I've come back.  >:( My other girls are fine although they're still a bit spooked and are laying haphazardly. The security, needless to say has been upped including biosecurity. (Towit: my neighbour's dog has been given the freedom of my fence.)

Once more, ta very much. I only wish it could have been good news.
