Mystery Plant ID
« on: June 14, 2011, 00:17 »
Back in March I scattered a packet of a wildflower seeds in the garden.

The 'meadow' is now almost a foot tall, but slap bang in the middle of it towers a gigantic 3ft-tall mystery plant.

The plant has a robust, prickly stem, with broad, rough, heart-shaped leaves. Several clusters of tiny yellow flowers are just beginning to bloom. Given enough water, the plant grows at a staggering pace. After a day-long downpour on Sunday, I woke up on Monday morning to find it had grown by approximately 5 inches overnight.

It was obviously a rogue seed that made its way into the packet by mistake, because it doesn't look like any of the plants in the photo. Does anyone know what plant it could be?

I'll upload a photo tomorrow but I am intrigued to know if anyone recognises the description.

I'm sure a photo will help. ;)

I am guessing here -- some kind of stray farmers crop such as Oil Seed Rape or a kale or wild/cross pollinated brassica. ????????????
Another odd idea -- mustard.

Don't think its rape, leaves too big. And the angelica I grew in Kent had white flowers.  Does look a bit like mustard, but again from what I remember, the leaves are a bit big?

Not much help here am I? lol

Yup, I recognised it from your description and definitely from the photo, but didn't know its name. Thank you DD. :)

I remembered why it was so familiar to me. There's one up at the top of the driveway near the gate.   Must spray the drive if the rain stops for long enough......
