Can you grow swede's in a seedbed and transplant them like other brassica's, or in modules and plant them out ? or do you just sow a row and thin out. Never grown them before but would like to try them this year

I don't think you can transplant them but I never grow them because all the local farmers do ...

I've had my best results sowing them direct, keeping them well watered, thinning them and protecting them from flea beetle and other beasties until they are good sized plants.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

I second: protect them against the flea beetle. They were a nightmare. Fleece work well till they were established.

Somebody recommended growing them on a ridge for best results.

I've not transplanted them usually sow direct.

I used to struggle with Swede's until FIL told me to make a raised drill and plant in that....after that great Swede's...not sure i understand why but it works for me.  :)

Same thing here. Swedes hate transplanting as much as carrots hate it. I iplant direct outside and cover for the horrendous flea beatles that love them. I won't plant nasturtium around here for the same reason; no point attracting something I don't want.

Heh gwiz, someone else who can't sleep eh?

I'm glad you posted that since I was thinking that, if you can transplant beetroot, then why not swede?  Maybe it only works for you because of the wizard in your avatar.

Direct sowing seems to be the favoured technique though.

Incidentally, the farmers up here all plant their swedes much later in the season.  I'm thinking maybe mid-June but I'll pay more attention to timing this year.  Seems to work - they certainly grow big 'uns.

Transplanted mine last year without any problems, apart from I gave them too much room and wasted space in the row, I will plant closer this year.
